SORRENTO PARKING

Sorrento Car Parking.

Have you ever considered exactly how much customer carparking is taken up by retail staff in shops?  I have asked around in approx some of the retail stores  to get an idea, and it is surprising.  In the approx. 40 retail shops that I visited  (noting there are over 100 shops in total) there is a minimum of 106 people at any given time in those 40 stores alone, conservatively we could say over 200 staff in totalhowever this doubles and in some cases triples over summer.

Currently staff are parking in:

  1. Morce Avenue carpark
  2. Side streets – George, Darling, Kerferd (near school), Pt Nepean rd service road up from Stringers
  3. Small Carpark near Sorrento Primary
  4. Footy Ground (limited)
  5. RSL block
  6. Behind the Conti – these stores weren’t counted in the spreadsheet or the numbers

Conti or Hotel Sorrento numbers were not counted as they use different options, Ocean Beach road isn’t used due to timed parking and hefty fines.

Potential car parking spaces with potential

  1. 88 multi storey spaces in Morce Avenue – (permanent staff parking?) $
  2. Sectioned off area in Footy ground for Staff parking inc CFA running track
  3. Footy ground site for netball courts and other places – not near the bowling club.
  4. Sectioned off areas in East and West caravan park (shuttle bus) $
  5. St Josephs school asphalt area – used for parking during events $
  6. Hotham rd, between Hotel Sorrento and the Footy Ground – measure road, maybe just line marking for angle parking until a more long term solution is available (removal/replacement of trees, parking in road reserve) $$ set up no charge parking
  7. Area behind the Building next to the museum (shuttle bus $)
  8. Check Parks Vic back beach parking occupancy, maybe a section there and a shuttle $
  9. Area behind church in Kerferd $
  10. Area behind masonic hall $

As mentioned I only got data from 40 shops, even so with approx. of the 60 odd additional stores that I didn’t visit but are staffed, the most conservative figure would be 400+ spaces required for staff.  Is it any wonder we have traffic and parking problems, with people milling around to find parks that are already occupied all day.

Traders should be reminded that their staff is taking up customer car spaces over summer.

We have to be mindful that staff members should not be the target for extra charges here, rather a deal with the employers.
